20th Century New Zealand
By the time the 20th century dawned New Zealand had established a thriving artistic community. The influences of those English and European artists and teachers that had settled in the country towards the end of the 19th century were now showing through in the work of their pupils. As the century progressed more talented local artists were travelling abroad and returning with the latest ideas from Europe.
The art produced during the 20th century reflected the many changes in society both here and overseas. These works range from the New Zealand born pupils of those early European teachers through the post-war era to the early modernists and then abstract painters. There is a vast variety of subjects, styles, mediums price ranges in this section.
