Situated in Shackleton’s ‘Nimrod’ hut the Mrs Sam stove was designed to burn anthracite coal. The stove operated 24 hours a day and provided enough heat to keep the temperature in the hut at 16 to 21 degrees above that outside. The stove provided not only warmth, hot meals, and fresh bread, but also allowed for hot baths and drying of clothes.
